VisibilitySmart Overview

What is VisibilitySmart?
VisibilitySmart is a new visibility solution that alerts shippers and logistics service providers earlier about cargo delays. The new solution can help you to improve your operations with daily summaries of shipment delays and to measure your carriers’ on-time performance and delay reasons with monthly scorecards. VisibilitySmart fosters collaboration by equipping you with timely information about cargo delays that you can act on with your carriers to improve service and to meet delivery schedules.

What are the benefits of VisibilitySmart?
CargoSmart has found that on average 95% of shipments arrive on time, while 5% have a delay that can have costly consequences. Terminal congestion, labor strikes, weather problems, or lack of space on a vessel can cause cargo delays that can disrupt supply chain plans. Late cargo can mean chargebacks if merchandise does not arrive by a sale date, factory shutdowns if parts are not available, or even spoiled goods if the cargo is delayed too long. VisibilitySmart helps you manage the 5% of shipments that have delays and improve your shipment planning.

Existing exception management processes today are based on historical data and are inefficient, untimely, highly manual, and expensive to manage. VisibilitySmart monitors and analyzes vessel, route, and cargo data from multiple sources including live vessel Automated Information System (AIS) data, ports, terminals, weather services, labor dispute updates, and carriers to anticipate cargo delays so you can easily find out earlier and start responding.

Near-term benefits include using the exception summary to have more time for contingency operations and delivery re-planning. At the same time, the spotted exceptions enable carriers’ customer service staff to be aware of and commit to recovery action plans.

Long-term benefits include using the monthly scorecard to analyze and make ongoing routing guide selection improvements and to measure carriers’ past on-time performance to support the next season’s contract negotiations.

What is new about VisibilitySmart? How does it differ from CargoSmart’s previous Exception Management visibility?
CargoSmart has long provided excellent exception-management tools for shippers and logistics service providers to manage their ocean shipments by detecting deviations from their shipment plans based upon actual or missing cargo tracking events along the shipment’s end-to-end route and timeline.

VisibilitySmart adds expert vessel, voyage, and route intelligence using advanced new techniques to detect real-time, in-transit, ocean-performance issues causing current and future delays to cargo onboard or awaiting transshipment loading.

What is the methodology behind VisibilitySmart?
CargoSmart has established the Global Vessel Voyage Monitoring Center to monitor and analyze live vessel data, route patterns, and shipment plans. The center spots exceptions as they are happening so that the industry can be informed earlier. More than exception alerts triggered by events that happened in the past, VisibilitySmart is powered by innovative technology and supported by a dedicated, highly specialized team to provide you with extensive shipment coverage and high quality data.

What is the data coverage of VisibilitySmart?
VisibilitySmart covers data from over 5,000 container vessels and 21 major carriers operating globally on regular liner services calling at 800 ports.

VisibilitySmart monitors exceptions for skipped ports, transshipment misconnections, and expected vessel arrival delays at the last port of discharge.

If you currently do not have shipments in CargoSmart’s system, we will submit Letters of Authorization (LOA) on behalf of your company to your carriers for inclusion.

At what point does CargoSmart consider a shipment to be delayed?
VisibilitySmart lets you set the tolerance level for when you consider a vessel to be late. You can customize the tolerance level by the number of days a shipment is considered late for the exception, Last Port of Discharge Vessel Arrival Delay.

How does CargoSmart obtain the reasons for each shipment exception?
CargoSmart includes the reasons for the delays with the daily exception summaries and monthly scorecard.

CargoSmart will contact your carriers on your behalf to confirm the reasons for the delays and assign a reason code to each delay. The availability of the reason codes is subject to each carrier’s feedback.

You may also provide your own reasons for delays to supplement or update the report. CargoSmart will note your reason in the respective summary details. If you submit your own reason codes, then they will be shown instead of the carriers’ given reasons in your scorecard.
