After the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) and
International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) reached a tentative
agreement for a new contract on February 20, we monitored vessel activities around
the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach on the US West Coast.
We found that between 23 and 26 container vessels waited in
queue outside the ports during the first week following the tentative
agreement, as shown in the chart. Moreover, it seems that the anchoring area
outside the ports is saturated. We observed over 10 additional vessels waiting within
500 kilometers of the ports.
Currently, the vessel queue does not reveal progress of clearing
the backlog. According to port officials of the Port of Los Angeles, it may take three months to clear the backlog. We will continue to
monitor the situation and report updates here.
